I can't be the only one who thinks, regarding age verification and ID enforcement on social media sites, that while they claim to be for the protection of minors, there is something inherently dodgy and insidious about that claim.
Also, what about their parents??
I get that it's impossible to monitor children all the time, especially a determined kid that doesn't want to wait until they're old enough, but the parents must educate their kids on why this is not a good idea.
I am saying this because in the good old days of Wattpad allowing DMs, I was contacted by a kid privately who happily told me their age (11) and (wtf???) then took offense when I said they shouldn't give away personal information and THEN they had the absolute cheek to tell me I was too old to be writing for my chosen fandom.
Pretty soon, I will be sticking to AO3 exclusively.
