Broken Window Theory Interview
HateMeBad Journal: What/Who is the Broken Window Theory?
Broken Window Theory is basically a clothing and apparel brand dedicated to capturing true street culture. It's the product of two longtime friends and artists getting together to produce an art-minded line of clothing featuring aesthetics of graffiti, street art, modern art, post modern movements, pop art and traditional elements of design and typography.
As the company has grown though it has become emblematic of the street culture it embodies- appearing constantly- whether it's being worn or one of our infamous stickers in tech streets.
HateMeBad Journal: When did you begin and what led you to doing what you do?
BWT: Broken Window Theory (BWT) has really been an idea the creators have shared for a number of years. But the inaugural clothing line was released two years ago. On a side note: Since both of us were born in 1989 we joke that the company was established in 1989.
HateMeBad Journal: How did you come up with the name?
BWT: The name for BWT comes from an actual social theory called the Broken Windows Theory that was popularized in the 1970s-80s during New York City's subway graffiti movement.
The premise basically states that social blight and the downfall of neighborhoods/cities stems from petty crime like vandalism. The name of our company pokes fun at the idea that urban art could be the cause of social ills- rather graffiti and street art just thrives more in desperate places that everyday society has forgotten about. We are interested in creating a world where people notice and appreciate the everyday art around them.
HateMeBad Journal: What is and are your objectives?
BWT: Our objective is simple- create a world where the unnoticed art in our everyday lives is more appreciated. An effort to take back our appreciation as a society of the visual landscape we inhabit.
HateMeBad Journal: This is strictly a artistic question im about to throw at you but at what point do yo realize a art form is for you?
BWT: The trick to finding an art form is try them all! Whenever the energy or work feels right you should explore that medium more. At the same time, a talented artist will constantly try different mediums whether its photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, new media, digital, performance art, or anything else.
HateMeBad Journal: In matters relating to your dreams is there a such thing as setting a goal to high? explain why or why not?
BWT: You can never set your goals too high because anything really is possible of you want something enough.
HateMeBad Journal: Whats the funniest thing you've seen on youtube?
BWT: Probably a video of a baby dancing to Waka Flocka.
HateMeBad Journal: If the national anthem could be any song of your choice what would it be?
BWT: Hahaha wow- I would say Changes by Tupac for the simple fact that his words ring true today more than any other musical artist.
HateMeBad Journal: How would you describe the taste of water?
BWT: Water tastes like liquid purity. Simple as that.
HateMeBad Journal: If you could name anything that is overrated in the world what is it? Why?(you can name multiple things)
BWT: Overrated? Hmm- I'm not in the business of calling other people out but there are definitely overrated people in everything from sports to music to television and movies to politics. But I will say that hate is overrated because hating someone will never get you anything in return but more hate.
HateMeBad Journal: Why does a hater hate?
BWT: Hahaha- good follow up question. Haters are in most cases people who are too lazy to do their own thing or incapable of achievements so they try to bring others down.
HateMeBad Journal: What events are coming up for broken window theory that people need to be looking for?
BWT: The website with a webstore, blog, photo galleries, interactive features, and videos will be finished being revamped soon. We also will be releasing a fall and winter line before the end if the year. Be on the look out for some really cool new clothes soon.
HateMeBad Journal: Where can people get in contact with you?
BWT: Email us at [email protected] or find us on Facebook/ tumblr/ Instagram and stay in touch with us that way. Shout out to any one who's down with the theory! B\/\/T
