They are arranged in a triangle to represent a cairn, a stack of rocks used as a marker to honor the fact the island was used as a marker at sea for sailors.

The arms are a pun on the name. Karm means "Frame" in Noregan. The island forms a border or frame against the sea, protecting the inland. The cross on the inside represents the Avaldsnes Church, a royal chapel during the middle ages. The island itself was also the place of kings to stay at if they needed to "get anywhere in haste"
