i keep seeing this on my timeline, so let me be clear

judaism is semi-closed. practices related to judaism require a barrier for entry. judaism is an indigenous religion and reserve the right to protect their cultural practices.

lilith is not open. kabbalah is not open. jewish mystism is not open.

there are ways to learn about these things and get involved in a community that do not involve stealing from indigenous cultures. in fact, you are less of a witch if your craft is stealing from closed and marginalized communities.

jewish people deserve to feel safe and to be welcomed with open arms into the witchcraft and practitioner community

begging upon begging for ex-christians to actually unpack not only their christian influenced ideas on how religion works, but also their deep seated hatred towards all religions.

buddy you hate other religions cause you were told to hate them when you were a christian.

yes, not all religions are good. and no, not all religions are bad. and yes, going around telling random religious people from cultures you don’t understand that they’re bad people and should be abolished for being religious isn’t cool.

also stop telling marginalized religions who are syncretic with christianity that they have to completely abandon that to be valid in their religion. no they don’t, and you don’t understand the history of religious oppression.

using the word ‘religious’ or ‘religion’ when you just mean christians or christianity de-credits your criticism of colonial christianity and the harm it does to society.

you are just advertising you see any religions as the same and don’t have intersectionality in your philosophy.

you are just ignoring culturally important and bipoc religions and diminishing them by not including them in the word religion.

Something many baby witches and pagans alike need to learn is that not every witch or practioner falls under or considers themselves a pagan.

Pagan is a term used against many marginalized communities across history, and notably against black, brown, and indigenous communities. It’s wonderful to reclaim that word and make it positive for you, but not everyone feels the same.

Pagan is also a massive umbrella term that encompasses many many different religions and cultures, all of which who practice differently and many of which have nothing in common together.

Someone can still be a witch, a practitioner, or religious outside of abrahamic or “mainstream” religions and still not identify with the term pagan. It doesn’t make their craft any less magical or important than those who do consider themselves pagan. Choosing to not use the title pagan should never exclude someone from participating in witchy community simply because they do not wish to use a word that was likely used to insult and destroy their culture.

Something I’ve noticed a lot around conversations of baneful magic especially within folk magic is the idea that risk or consequences somehow disappears with experience or certain types of magic, or that you can protect yourself against all of it and never face risk

I never want to fearmonger, particularly when it comes to baneful magic as I believe it’s something that needs to be destigmatized, but risk does not just disappear. Consequences don’t just fade away at a certain point

Speaking as a practionor who usually probabbaly more then their fair share of baneful magic, you learn to accept the risk and consequences. To face it head on. To understand that there is an equal balance you must expect from the world. If you want something to happen, you must give something in return, what that might be is a variable.

But to be able to be skilled in baneful work, to use it without fear you must accept the risks, accept the balance. Not to let yourself be blindly hurt, but understand that you must pay into the world as well.
