Hubble spots cosmic flapping “Bat Shadow” that fledgling star HBC 672′s planet-forming disk casts on a more distant star-forming region. [ video in source ]
Un articolo pubblicato sulla rivista "The Astrophysical Journal" riporta osservazioni ripetute in momenti diversi con il telescopio spaziale Hubble della stella HBC 672 e del movimento dell'ombra proiettata dal suo disco protoplanetario su una nube interstellare. Un team di ricercatori guidato da Klaus Pontoppidan dello Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) ha confrontato le posizioni dell'ombra nel corso di 13 mesi notandone il movimento, che ha un effetto visivo simile a un battito d'ali dato che la sua forma le richiama al punto che la stella e il suo disco protoplanetario sono stati soprannominati Ombra del Pipistrello. Potrebbe trattarsi di un pianeta che si sta formando e che sta distorcendo il disco.
