Even down to the way he places himself relatively to others - he’s always a comfortable distance away. Never close enough to just... touch spontaneously. He always has to be able to anticipate it. Along with that, he avoids touching others if he can help it- instead calling out verbally or gesturing if he needs to grab someone’s attention.
By that line of reasoning, it’s difficult trying to initiate affection like he was able to prior to the passing of Cruz and Karen.
There’s unspoken permission for the other members of his Home Base to touch him- and although he reacts stiffly by reflex, he’s not adverse to it. He may even... enjoy it sometimes, even though he never seeks it out himself. A reassuring smack on the back by Yakumo, a gentle hand on the shoulder from Coco-- yes, he needs the contact to ground himself just like anyone else. Sometimes there’s solace that can’t be found it words but can come from a hug. Humans, by nature, crave it; and what is he but a creature who exists in the likeness of one? No matter how used to solitude he is, the comfort of being in an embrace isn’t something he’d just take for granted. He’s just adapted to be able to live without it.
Despite how.. lacking he is in that department, he is very vocal in terms of verbal affirmation. He praises his team-members whenever they do well. He reminds them of things he appreciates about them without any prompting or reason. When he’s alone with a companion on a field mission, he on more than a single occasion blurts out that he’s glad to be so in-sync with them.
And he can express his affections through the intent of his other gestures as well. All the work he pours into his research is for what he believes to be a happy ending for everyone he cares about. Even though he’s busy ( and often neglects himself, ) he will prioritize the individual needs of his friends without so much as batting an eyelash if need be.
Long story short, he’s not so big on engaging hugs or hand-holding. He shows his love through his generosity; consciously or otherwise.
