Add a secondary hard drive to your notebook or Macbook (and even iMac or all in one PC) with HDD Caddy
Why would you want to have a secondary hard drive in your laptop or Macbook Pro? For most people a secondary hard drive is not needed. But if you happen to be in one of the following situations you might want to consider to add a secondary hard drive in your laptop.
Situation A: you have installed a very fast solid state drive (SSD) in your laptop to maximize the performance of your laptop. Smart investment! A SSD can make older laptops perform in real life just as fast as newer laptops. However SSD's are expensive, you pay relatively more per GB than for a tradition hard drive. Let's say you have upgraded your laptop with 120GB SSD Samsung EVO (it's the fastest SSD at the moment!). Which costs around 100USD (100 EURO). 120GB is enough for Windows 7, Windows 8 or OS X Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion. Combined with the most recent updates and your frequently used programs, you would have left around 30GB free space. Yes, 30GB. Which isn't a lot if you still need to add your personal files (high res pictures/photo's, movies, documents, and other files). This opposes a problem because now you have a very fast laptop but not enough storage capacity.
Situation B: you literally store every file that you find on the internet on your laptop. Basically your laptop is almost out of free storage space. Every day you carry your external USB hard drive with your laptop. It's a hassle because it is carrying extra weight as well.
Situation C: you use your laptop for work and also for personal use. At work you need to work in a Windows environment. Your laptop is maintained by the computer service desk of your work. That means you can't install or leave any personal software on your laptop. It's highly possible they restrict any form of 3rd party installations by disabling administrative rights with your employee account. That can be pretty annoying when you are not able to do things you like on your laptop. With a secondary hard drive you can install a separate operating system and set up your own computer account. This means you can have an operating system installed only for personal use.
You can imagine there are more situations where you a secondary internal hard drive is desirable. In some laptops, like 17" Asus or Dell laptops you can actually have two hard drives. It's called dual hard drive option. Basically there is extra room and an extra connector to plug in any 2.5" SATA hard drive.
However in most other laptops you can only install one hard drive. This hard drive goes into the primary bay. It's a hard drive slot inside your laptop. Luckily with HDDCADDY it's actually possible to have two hard drives in a laptop where originally one hard drive would fit.
The HDD Caddy (or hard disk drive caddy) from HDDCADDY.COM is an aluminium case where you can put in a hard drive.
At the back of this case there is a connector that fits in your laptop. The HDD Caddy replaces the optical drive (in most cases you never use the optical drive) and allows you to put the second hard drive in your laptop!
The secondary hard drive will be recognized as a second volume. You can use it in the same way as an external USB hard drive. With most laptops the connector in the optical bay is SATA2 or SATA3. With SATA2 you have a transfer speed of 300MB/s and SATA3 600MB/s. Because SATA is a direct transfer connection it is faster than USB. Because USB requires transfer connection via the CPU it causes a time delay.
