ok if you haven't already written this yet i wanna hear about!! that scene in kh3 when everyone's getting swept up by the cyclone and sora loses hope but more generally -- what would get him to that level of despair and *genuinely* make him give up?
that scene was an absolute train wreck ; i love the message it was trying to convey ( that sora is powerless on his own, that he is nothing without the friends in his heart ) but it was done in a way that felt… really out of sync? why would sora lose spirit with riku — who is one if not his strongest source of strength and inspiration — right there? why would sora be so quick to lose hope? it made no sense to me.. but i digress.
to answer your question! for sora to reach that level of hopelessness, it would genuinely be the loss of his friends. not the way the game portrayed it but to actually see them disappear and vanish before his eyes ; to see them fade away and to watch their hearts float away. for sora to watch as they perish and for him to realize that he failed them. his friends are more than his strength, they’re his whole world. they’re his home. without them? sora has nothing. sora is nothing. it would be a despair unlike anything he’s ever felt. his heart would cave in and shatter from the anguish, his light would expire right there and then. the darkness would overtake him and sora would drown in self - hatred, sinking deeper and deeper. and unlike all the other times? there isn’t a light to guide him back home.
