thinking about how in long way down its "build a cathedral but WE never prayed" and in otb its "its a church of burnt romances and IM too far gone to pray" :(((
Big, big brain!
We built a fire/ burned in the flames // Built a cathedral/ but we never prayed.
It’s a church of burnt romances/ and I’m too far gone to pray
We built it up so high and now I’m falling/ it’s a long way down from here
Tall stories on the page/ short glories on the fade// I’ve been close enough to touch/ but I never cared for love
-
We can imagine Long Way Down and Only the Brave to be written from two perspectives of the same circumstance.
LWD is at the moment that the singer realizes that it’s going to be all over, the moment of suspense as the fall begins. The plummet hasn’t quite started, but they all recognize the height from which they’ll be falling, miles above earth. It’s a melancholy, inevitable feeling, a downward plunging rollercoaster without a stop. They’re still thinking of “We” — singing as partners.
OTB takes place afterwards, after Louis has let go of his illusions. “Aren’t there enough dying stars in your skies? Besides, you never cared for love. You can move on. You will survive.”
Louis mentioned once that the song was originally written for Liam Gallagher (OTB is a very Liam G song!), and he shares with Liam the aftermath of coming from a famous band. It’s a song about a solo career after the euphoria of being in one of the world’s iconic groups.
But both songs are also about love.
In LWD, they lyrics recognize that passion has its limits. You can build a cathedral or a space ship (grand gestures of romance and fantasy), but reality has its boundaries. When you look outside of the passion, things look bleak.
(After the band breaks up, after being disillusioned by love.)
In OTB, the love song is about acceptance and self-love. “They’ll say, I told you so. /Come on, when you know, you know.” The love that you give to others may not be returned, and indeed may even cause you immense pain, but the giving is important.
It is about loving yourself enough to survive the circumstances, loving all parts of yourself, especially how you love, how you expose your vulnerabilities even as the world burns down around you. As Louis says, “Love in only for the brave.”
: got woke up i fuckign had tears streaming down my face to open my phone but i’m different. Obviously it’s peaceful lasercorn: it’ll help clean up after if you weren’t gay 🌈 before gay marriage was legalized.
..well, since age twelve, I've felt like I'm someone else 'cause I hung my original self from the top bunk with a belt.
