O U T O F M A G I C
I actually really love movies (literally, all movies!) so this is a tough question to answer! Because I have favorites for all categories of films (like movies that give me good-feelings, or movies that move me to tears, etc). Because of that, I’m just going to throw “some” favorites out off the top of my head, and in no particular order:
2009 Star Trek Reboot - I have loved this film since the moment it came out. I was raised by a Trekker mother on TOS series and films, and the characters of Star Trek are a big part of my childhood. So when the reboot happened, I was both excited and anxious. Luckily, the casting was a homerun, and both my mother and I adored the film. We went to see it together and it really meant a lot to be able to share that experience with her, like the great hoop of my life was coming back around and I was rediscovering my mom again. Also, that film is just fun.
Singin’ in the Rain - I’m a fan of musicals in general, and few musicals have done it as well and with as much innovation and self-awareness as the film Singin’ the Rain. Gene Kelly, while having his problems, does phenomenal dancing and choreography in this movie. Do you know that he invented an entirely new type of Camera boom crane, just so they could shoot the massive dance number he planned for ‘Gotta Dance?’ Every musical number in that film is distinct and delightful, and the plot holds strong throughout. If I ever need a pick me up distraction, this is the film I watch!
Logan - This film... I can’t. I’ve been a Wolverine fan since I started reading comics at the age of 6, and I take depictions of him very personally. I can enjoy most of the X-Men films because I think casting Hugh Jackman as Logan was a stroke of genius, but the films... they get a lot wrong about the Character. The film Logan is the exception. It is a perfect, insightful, agonizing look into the core elements that make Wolverine who he is. It is heartbreaking for me to watch, I cannot do so without sobbing, but I love and admire this film so very, very much. I will always appreciate it for encapsulating the pain and perseverance of a character I have loved my entire life.
So there you go! Three of my favs, and why!
