Peter stood twitching by the large front doors to the castle. He looked suspicious, too suspicious. It did not help that he continued to check his watch. Professor MacGonagall had been by an hour earlier and asked him what he was up to, and Peter could do nothing but squeal loudly. He was surprised when it had worked and she walked away, leaving him alone. His heart pounded in his chest. They were late.
If they were late leaving the castle on this full moon night, then they would certainly be late catching up with Remus. Remus never said it, he was far too polite to say anything, but Peter knew, in his heart, that Remus did not like going through his transformation alone. If they continued to be late, then alone was what Remus would be. If that happened, Peter reminded himself, then Remus would be upset. If Remus was upset, then Moony would be upset, and if Moony was upset... Peter paused, froze really, and he pushed those dark thoughts out of his head. He knew he was important in all this, of course he was, they couldn't get to Remus without him... on the other hand, a rat did not stand much of a chance up against a werewolf, and Peter did not like that. He checked his watch again, swore, and began to pace.
