Three Laws of Robotics
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Artificial Intelligence
A virtual intelligence (or VI) is a rudimentary version of an artificial intelligence (or AI), but is incapable of self actualization or sentience. A VI is designed to be an intelligent user interface that can be posed questions about whatever the VI is installed into, and will answer them and be able to give recommendations or instructions. They are designed to simulate natural communication and are often presented as a hologram of a sapient humanoid, generally of the species most likely to access the VI. VI 'Agents' are also available; these are more compact and menial versions of VIs and are specialized for install into very specific parameters, such as ship and vehicle interfaces (think Computer from Star Trek).
An Artificial Intelligence(AI)s are far more advanced than VIs; they are self-aware and capable of learning and independent thought and decision making. Creation of a conscious AI requires adaptive code, a slow, expensive education, and a specialized quantum computer called a "blue box".
An AI cannot be transmitted across a communication channel or computer network. Without its blue box, an AI is no more than data files. Loading these files into a new blue box will create a new personality, as variations in the quantum hardware and runtime results create unpredictable variations.
