the griffin & the girl .

long conjecture comes when regarding the missing right eye of General Beatrix within the game of FFIX. no one really knows exactly how she lost it, to what/who, and when she lost it. Beatrix herself is renowned as an astounding warrior, both on the mist continent and off -- even the playable characters within the game’s party know of her ; THE ROSE GENERAL, THE SLAYER OF A HUNDRED MEN IN A SINGLE BLOW, A WOMAN WHO COULD EVEN SILENCE THE CRYING OF BABES, etc.   she is the sword and shield of the Alexandrian crown, next to Steiner, and effectively the head of the Queensguard if we are to get technical.  all of that is well and good but does little to explain the incredibly noticeable eye patch that she dons in the game.  how did a 27 year old woman lose her eye and when ?  

i have a small theory due to a little in-game text description regarding of the game’s weird little ticks -- the Treno Auction House. in that auction house you can get a bunch of random items, be it for moral boost, for crafting, for learning summons. one of the items that you can purchase is ‘ THE GRIFFIN HEART ’  .  now each item within final fantasy ix, if it’s a key item has a little description to go along with it, usually said by a character in the game that you’ve met or heard about ( cinna’s mention regarding coffee always makes me laugh ) . why do i bring up this ? well, Beatrix is the one that states the flavor text for the Griffin’s Heart: FEAR IT’S SOUL, FOR IT KNOWS NO TERROR.  

consider the prowess of Beatrix for a second, consider that she’s an undefeatable boss, consider that she swats down your team like you’re insects ( even calls you insects at one point, baby girl, that’s rude )  -- for her to state that on the item itself, on this monster heart makes me think that this woman has a reason to be afraid of it.  now of course, just like i stated before this is total conjecture -- but i have reason to believe that a griffin is responsible for Beatrix’s missing eye.   

take a look at the size of Beatrix’s eye patch -- it’s massive, it’s not just an eye path, it covers the side of her face and a good portion of her forehead.  

this leads me to believe that whatever took her eye, also mauled her because while this is concept art, this also moves into the game where the patch is even larger. i’m thinking to myself, what could do that ? continuing with my train of thought, a griffin’s claw could easily take out nearly half the side of a human’s face -- especially considering how MASSIVE (image link) they are in this game and the size of their claws. 

also the notion that Beatrix is speaker of the text regarding the heart, which are rare and hard to acquire, makes me also feel that she was ( totally badass indulgent headcanon time ) in turn for the griffin mutilating her -- she ripped it’s heart out, probably while bleeding horrendously and fighting for her life.  it took something of hers so she took something of it’s -- which is, i admit, really ridiculous sounding but think about who we’re talking about here.

 moving on to the time it took place:  Beatrix is an adapted, skilled, and precise swordsman. having a missing eye does nothing for depth perception and would probably hinder her skills greatly.  knowing that, she is so deadly and strong in the game, not only using her sword but also exacting Seiken ( a move set that’s solely hers in game ) would take a great amount of training, dedication, and ZERO foul ups.  which can only make me believe that the loss of her eye had to occur a long time ago -- at least five years prior to the events of FFIX because for her to adapt, for her to train, for her to adjust and compensate for a missing eye and also the pain to recuperate after it happened ?  it would make sense that it had to happen either in her teen years or early twenties .  

also when you think about Beatrix’s position as General within the Alexandrian army, you’ll come to note that she probably didn’t have that rank when this all first occurred, she was probably just a soldier -- and so not only was she blinded on one side of her face, but she proceeded to not let that stop her, become a highly ranked officer for the crown that she serves and then also make a name as the most terrifying swordsman in the known FFIX world ?   i’m screaming a bit right now.  

so that’s... those are my thoughts.  tl;dr - beatrix got blinded by a griffin when she was a young nothing, ripped it’s heart out, and became an even bigger badass.

Death and Revival. Being Robin has always been Jason Peter Todd’s dream, but it kept slipping past his fingers. His frustating carreer as Batman’s sidekick came to a quick halt before he could even prove himself. In an attempt to save his own mother, he is beaten to death by the Joker. Batman had arrived too late and the boy wonder was dead. 

After his brutal death, Jason  was quickly buried and moved past. He should have stayed that way. Should have stayed dead. Of course, fate does not aply to altered reality. Time speeds up to make up for lost tme and the person who crawls out of the soil isn’t the one that was put in. Older and scarred across the face, he doesn’t remember who he is. 

Memory loss. Due to constant trauma to the brain prior to death, X can not remember more than shreds of his past. Not even his old names was known to him. From time to time, his past invades his dreams, but the memories do not stay. It is uncertain if he will ever regain them. 

Color Blindness. Specifically, Tritanopia,  in which a person confuses yellows and blues with green and violet. His vision is a oreminant shade of light burgandy. Developed post-death.

Benjamin Button Syndrome( shit aint real don’t google) : When he died, his body stopped aging and began to rot. Due to this, when he was brought back to life, his body tried to catch up and overshot. The former Robin kid lost most of his youth and rapidly became an adult.

An important note.

Morpheus is not exceptionally bright. They are intelligent, yes, but it’s very clear that any potential that they ever had at a successful career was mired by their own egocentrism. Their disdain and sloppy handling for what was actually a very important and potentially influential position within the Umbrella Corporation is clear enough proof of this. I think it concise to say that they was promoted beyond their capability. Their disdain was born of an insatiable desire for more. More prestige. 

I guarantee you that they turned their nose up at it simply due to the fact that ‘waste disposal’ was in the title, yet saw themselves as having no choice but to accept the position.

Then there’s the sloppy managing, the  careless loss of experimental BOWS such as the TYRANT ‘Pluto’, and the embezzling of resources to further their own agenda. It’s no surprise that Umbrella would want them gone. Had they not penned Raccoon City on them, then they no doubt would have simply opted to assassinate them.
