What did my culture teach me I “should” want? THE HANGED MAN I’m thinking of a couple different ways on this one. On one hand the older members of my culture taught my generation that we can be anyone we want if we work hard enough and believe enough. And then my comrades were hit hard with a harsher reality. Yet we were still expected to pull ourselves by our bootstraps and want to work even harder. If you look through the lens of my peers, however, we have adjusted to the peculiar life we’ve been born to and have learned to see from a differing perspective. We are not like our parents or grandparents. And to anyone in our age group - we get each other. We let our peers choose their truth from their pronoun to their spirituality. ✨ 5. What did my schooling/education teach me I “should” want? KNIGHT OF PENTACLES The school system taught me that I should want a set routine and their brand of structure. And I excelled here because I craved structure in such a tipsy turvy world. Until recently though, I only found structure through school. I am now learning how to create my own routine and habits and it’s been super healthy for me. ✨ 7. What did my family teach me I “should” want? ACE OF CUPS Oof. My family expected me to be the hand holding the cup to catch all of their emotions - good, bad, mundane. I was taught, though not directly, that my wants or needs did not matter. I got used to being their cup bearer while I shoved my own emotions down. ✨ 9. How have I been suppressing my true hunger as a result of these conditioned ideas? QUEEN OF WANDS I hid my inner queen of wands so deep that I didn’t know she was in there at all. She was my first stalker card and for me she symbolizes awakening to my power. How can I fully own my desires, no matter how big they might be? THE CHARIOT I really like the artist’s description for this card: the Canada geese “seem to inherently know where to go, naturally following the ley lines in the land.” Ley lines feel so mysterious and magical to me (thanks to the Raven Cycle books by Maggie Stiefvater). I am a part of whatever land I find myself on and that’s incredible. As I was beginning my magical journey while living in Thailand, I felt my soul long to go back to my homeland (the Ozarks). And when I arrived, I felt the land acknowledge me. It was truly magical! I don’t need to make excuses as to why I love this land full of contradictions. Bible Belt, Red state, and so many other traits I am ashamed of… but the land itself - it calls to me. I am in dire straits when it comes to my finances so I wince when I think of money and resources right now. However, my focus has shifted to what I already own. I have accumulated little treasures and spending the time using or rearranging these treasures reminds me to be grateful for what I already have. And seeing what I have accumulated reminds me that the Wheel of Fortune will eventually turn and my financial state is temporary.
