SYNOPSIS:
This play takes places in the same house in the fictional Chicago neighborhood of Clybourne Park, the setting for Lorraine Hansberry’s A RAISIN IN THE SUN. Act 1 is set in 1959 and Act 2 is set in 2009. Each act centers on the new occupants of the household.
In 1959, Russ and Bev are moving out of the house in the all-white community of Clybourne Park because Bev thinks Russ needs a change of scenery after the suicide of their Korean War veteran son. The house had been sold to the Younger family, the African American family from A Raisin in the Sun. Karl, a community leader, finds out that the house is being sold to a black family. He tries to prevent the sale, but only incurs the wrath of Russ, who feels the community has ostracized Bev and him since the death of their son.
In 2009, Steve and Lindsey have purchased the house in the crumpling community of Clybourne Park. There is a meeting at the house to resolve issues between Steve and Lindsey and Lena, a niece of the Younger family, and Kevin, who now own the house. The issues relate to planned additions and improvements that may exceed the current zoning codes. The meeting falls apart as Lena confronts the modern form of racism.
RELEVANT ROLES:
BETSY (Deaf F) is the pregnant wife of Karl. She is a happy and outgoing person, but has a keen sense of atmosphere and can feel the bad vibes before others. ○ The role of Betsy requires a natural fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
JIM (hearing M) is a young pastor who is still awkward at his job. He is earnest, but often clumsy and not very subtle. ○ The role of Jim requires some signing. Knowledge of sign language is helpful but not required.
KARL (hearing M) is the husband of Betsy and the de facto defender of the neighborhood. He thinks he is looking out for everyone’s interests, but his main concern is his own bottom line. ○ The role of Karl requires some ASL fluency.
