With the temperatures dropping, we sometimes rely on a "Canadian Candle" to keep the coffee and ourselves warm up at the log yard. What is a "Canadian Candle" you might ask?

A Canadian candle, also known as a Swedish torch or log candle, is a simple and effective way to make a self-sustaining fire.

Using a chainsaw, we make four cuts into the log from the top, dividing it into eight sections. Cut down about three-quarters of the way, leaving the base intact. Place kindling or fire gel into the cuts at the top of the log. Light the kindling or gel to ignite the log.

As the kindling burns, it will ignite the inner parts of the log, creating a chimney effect. The flames will draw air through the cuts, sustaining the fire for several hours.🔥

This shot was taken on this day, 5 years ago! It was a bit chilly up at the log yard so we made a “Swedish Fire Log” or “Canadian Candle” by plunging the chainsaw in to the centre of the log. A great heat source in the Autumn/Winter weather and it lasts hours.
