With  just  enough  wine  to  make  the  world  soften  passing  her  lips,  Myranda  found  herself  leaning  against  a  cool  stone  wall,  staring  out  into  the  pinpricks  of  light  from  each  candle,  though  her  eyes  did  not  quite  see.  It  was  quieter,  here.  The  noise  still  floated  to  her,  but  more  on  a  breeze  than  a  harsh  storm.  She  waited  until  her  breathing  evened  and  the  world  felt  a  little  easier  to  handle.  Eventually,  she  knew,  she  would  escape  out  to  the  night  air,  let  the  stillness  soothe  the  rattle  in  her  chest.  But  that  was  improper,  so  early  into  the  festivities.  Instead,  smoothing  down  the  silver  dress  and  stepping  back  into  the  crowds,  she  did  as  she  had  been  taught  through  the  years,  and  covered  it  with  a  smile.  "My  liege.  Are  you  enjoying  the  festivities?"

promised relaxation and 'me' time for the day granted to his beloved wife, bringing the father of four alone with three of his children now running about, scattered in the snow-covered field. laughter, thuds, followed by even louder fits of laughter echoing from where he stood. smile soon clings to his features, watching them find merriment even in the simplest offerings of the resort. one quick look and he spots something fall into the mounds of snow, catching up with the owner of the pocket from where it must have fallen from, ❝ here , you dropped this . ❞

oddity but melts like the marshmallows afloat on the sweet chocolatey concoction steaming from his cup. brings him back to times spent with friends, without a need for a disguise, or rushing to get only what he needed to avoid camera flashes and fans overtaken by their excitement to respect boundaries — one of the many drawbacks of fame he supposed. and what normal is to them still remained far too extravagant for others, harrow string of thoughts caused for him to fumble, digress to the mess that he was before. it was humbling, but comforting at the same time. ❝ the uh… hot chocolate's really good , have you tried it ? ❞

arushi  tries  to  listen  (  really  ,  she  does  )  .  but  the  scene  from  over  the  other's  shoulder  is  so  absurd  that  an  unbridled  snort  and  guffaw  escapes  her  ,  startling  herself  .  as  laughter  finally  fades  out  ,  she  flashes  @heavnle  @sacrificeds  @steelfyre  a  sheepish  smile  .  a silent  apology ,  twofold  ,  "  ugh  ,  i'm  totally  derailing  the  subject  here  ,  but  i  need  to  know  i'm  not  imagining  this  .  "  speaking  a  mile  a  minute  ,  so  the  other  won't  miss  the  sight  ,  phone  sliding  seamlessly  from  pocket  to  hand  ,  "  …  is  that  a  giraffe  headed  for  the  ski  lift  ?  "

Hands  curl  into  balls  at  her  side,  nails  pressing  into  palm  as  she  forces  herself  into  one  deep  breath,  then  another,  then  another.  She  had  felt  disconnected  as  of  late,  grasping  to  strings  being  pulled  from  her,  every  time  feet  felt  stable  on  the  ground  another  earthquake  coming  to  send  her  tumbling.  Another  breath.  Another.  She  smoothes  her  face  into  something  closer  to  neutral,  drops  her  shoulders  and  allow  the  tension  to  ease.  "You're  right,  of  course."  She  swallows  around  the  lump  in  her  throat.  "I...  I  think  I  should  retire  for  the  evening." This  was  a  moment  that  should  have  been  confined  to  her  rooms,  to  the  silence  after  maids  had  been  dismissed,  where  there  was  no  one  to  watch  besides  the  flickering  candle,  rather  than  facing  the  public.

If  she  closes  her  eyes,  sometimes  the  river  sounds  just  enough  like  a  calm  sea  to  break  her  heart.  She  lingers  by  the  Mander  and  waits,  just  waits  for  that  one  moment  that  brings  back  a  flash  of  cold  water  and  sea  foam.  There  are  voices,  laughter,  nearby  and  she  tries  to  shut  it  out,  focuses  on  the  sound  on  the  water  lapping  on  the  edge  of  the  river.  It's  not  the  same,  but  it's  close,  and  it's  all  she  can  get  in  this  moment  so  it  will  have  to  do.  "It  is  such  a  lovely  day."  She  sighs,  eyes  opening,  and  the  fantasy  comes  crashing  down.  Lush  green  and  gold,  flowers  every  shade  of  the  rainbow,  a  warm  sun  beating  down  on  her  skin.  She  contorts  face  into  serene  smile.  "I  could  not  help  but  appreciate  such  beauty,  now  we  all  have  so  much  more  free  time."

the  lady  regent  can't  recall  sitting  down  once  all  evening  .  dancing  ,  conversing  ,  partaking  in  food  and  drink  ,  yes  ,  but  when  had  they  taken  a  proper  break  ?  the  consequences  are  apparent  in  the  arches  of  their  feet  ,  the  additional  weariness  in  their  bones  ,  the  heaviness  in  their  heart  as  the  night  moves  forward  .  they  find  roost  at  an  empty  table  for  a  moment  of  relative  solitude  .  delicate  wrist  twists  back  and  forth  ,  watching  crimson  gemstone  on  their  dance  card  catches  the  light  ,  allowing  their  thoughts  to  wander  —  until  a  shadow  crosses  their  person  ,  and  they  are  snapped  back  to  the  present  .  fingers  brush  across  their  cheek  ,  catching  for  a  split  second  before  resting  under  their  jaw  as  they  turn  to  face  the  other  , "  good  evening  ,  @heavnle  @steelfyre  @vi0light  @vxlxrdohxeris  @wcrfcres  .  have  you  come  to  collect  ?  "  they  jest  ,  donning  a  smile  once  again  —  the  switch  instantaneous  ,  as  it  must  be  .  "  i  require  but  a  moment  of  respite  ,  then  i'll  gladly  join  you  .  " even if her participation is cordial at best .
