I mourn the loss of the very fun and interesting relationship dynamics the manga had.
Jiyu and Chanyoung were friends -in - law who worked like reluctant teammates to make sure thier stupid friends get together, the real matchmakers of the story. It showed how they genuinely cared about the happiness of thier respective best friends. They each thier own personalities still and I believe if the drama wanted them to be together there could have been a slow burn where they interact while trying to get heesu and seungwon together and slowly see each other's potential while being single people blinded by the bright love of thier closest friends. But instead, we get these two infatuated teenagers who care more about thier interests ( tennis and music) than thier friends. Niether of them really care what's going on with heesu or seungwon. Jiyu took seungwons crush on heesu as a funny thing that's happening. Chanyoung simply does not seem to care for heesu in any way. These two aren't even talking to thier friends about thier budding relationship.
In the manga I loved how chanyoung seemed to be burdened by heesus feelings towards him but only because he cared. He didn't understand but he never blamed or thought heesu wierd for liking him. He simply wished heesu to be happy and knew that heesu would not be happy being stuck only with chanyoung as he cannot return the feelings. He did show it a little awkwardly but that boy had a very good heart, no wonder heesu liked him. Chanyoungs slagman qualities of having many girlfriends he didn't really care about also ended up having a reason of wanting heesu to get his own life, and also because he couldn't reject anyone (😭😭). Drama chanyoung is just like that for no reason. How can I like him. He is a green flag to jiyu obv, but he seriously doesn't care about any of the other girls he dates like he was dating that girl while getting closer to jiyu. Why does heesu like him we don't know. We don't know if he noticed heesu likes him or how he can react to that since he doesn't give a shit about heesu other than when he has issues to discuss of his own.
The third friend is pitiful. Niether heesu or chanyoung respect him. He also has a girl who likes him but he's too into another girl to notice...what's the point. I actually do care about this relationship but i don't like all the undertones this has. The girl seems embarrassed about her crush on him. She showers him with anonymous gifts knowing he's gonna delude himself into thinking they're from his crush and doesn't do anything about it. Why man. Why
And the relationships between heesus sisters and thier boyfriends . I get that they're supposed to make him think about his own feelings. I guess the girl I mentioned just now is also supposed to make him think about how his feelings are his own to reveal or hide. But this is a mess of side couples in a story where we have absolutely 0 development between the main couple. Seungwons likes heesu since minute 1 and it's the same. If he was atleast the one giving his carrot juice heesu would have a reason to be curious about him, but no that's someone's else too.
I know there are many people who are loving this drama and would think I'm nitpicking, I just love the original manga so much and I never wished for the story and characters to be reinterpreted like this. If it had been done well I atleast would just take it as a new story and enjoyed a good drama. But I don't understand why they would change so much and put heesu and seungwon in the background with all the new storylines that have none of the charm the manga, it's characters, the relationships and it's message had.
