And he doesn't want to reach down to help us, he gets his kicks just binge watching us struggling, hurting, killing, dying-- screwing it up again and again. Lazily stirring it up when things threaten to get too placid. This city is only here to satisfy his sick voyeuristic pleasure.

Monty, Charles, and Edwin (Arranged Marriage AU: Chapter 8)

There is something shining in Charles’ eyes as he says with a smile that somehow manages to straddle the line between delight and grief, “You could go anywhere. Do anything. You have the entire world at your fingertips, mate.”

They’re not wrong. The possibilities that lie a mere touch away are fucking endless.

Edwin hands Monty the document, an entire future being transferred from hand to hand as Monty takes the paper between incredulous fingers. "Divorce is yours, if you wish it. It always was, and it certainly remains yours to claim now, if you so wish."

Monty looks down at the papers in his hand, this small packet of documents, typewritten words and signatures bundled together to give him an entire future that he never, ever dreamed of.

Monty seriously thinks about it for a moment. His mother is gone. He has no chains tying him down. He has money, now. A fucking mansion and companies to his name. 

Monty could have the adventures he always dreamed of. Sell the mansion and the companies, set off on a whirlwind world-wide tour, live out those fairytale lives, search for those stars.

He could fly anywhere. Be anything.

And yet-

Monty looks at Charles and Edwin, the way that they are offering him the world despite the ache they are clearly trying to disguise in those beautiful eyes that he has spent the last couple of months falling so deeply in love with.

Because that’s the thing, isn’t it? The ring around his neck hasn’t been a chain in a very long time.
