His life was only one year long -- he was born full-grown when the seeds were sown in the fields, he grew stronger as they grew taller, and grew weak again when they were harvested late in the fall. Girls sacrificed themselves to him through dance, all so he would revive and have these peaceful moments.

After all, in rainstorms like these, the mortals weren't likely to tend to their fields.

Alexei was perfectly content to walk the fields and ripen the wheat underfoot in solitude. After all, he couldn't risk the children seeing him and shouting his god's name to anyone who cared to hear. Solitude was his life, but it wasn't a life he minded. The happiness on their faces as they harvested food to help them survive the coming months was usually the last thing he saw before he died once more.
