Cosplay tip: How to make a dark visor for your mask or helmet from cheap & easy materials

I recently had to grapple with the question of how to disguise my eyes under the mask I made for Revan (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic). In the original, there is a black, rounded, see-through plastic panel obscuring them, like dark sunglasses, or the visor of a biker helmet, or in the eye-holes of a Stormtrooper helmet, or even Darth Vader’s mask.

Now, I can’t afford a biker helmet visor, or to get anything made specifically for me, and I do not feel comfortable trying to make something from, say, acrylic glass. So here is what I came up with:

1. You need a piece of flexible, transparent plastic, somewhat larger than the size of the visor you are making. Make sure it is easily bendable, but thick enough to stay in shape. You can use the thick foil they make for Window Color mobiles, which you get at a craft shop, or you can do what I did and go through your trash use the kind of clear plastic packaging that a lot of products come in (provided it is flat and big enough for your purposes).

2. Get black, adhesive window screen like the one that is used on car windows or car lights. I’m not sure what places sell this, probably car places, but I got it from ebay for a couple of bucks. It comes in different shades, and I opted for the darkest, which I would advise you to do as well if you want it to look totally black.

3. Apply the screen to your clear plastic. Make sure you don’t get bubbles! Basically go for the same technique that you would use to apply a protective screen to your phone: apply a small area, smooth it out thoroughly, then use a card or something to push down the next area of screen, smooth it out, etc.

4. Cut out the visor. Make sure you leave enough extra material to glue it to the mask from the inside. Then do exactly that.

Congrats! You now have a visor that obscures your face, but is still completely see-through from the inside!!
