In canon he is grafted to the ship. Check out the HS wiki's page for Ancestors. It shows the picture and also describes it. P sure he can't sit down :c
The wiki is edited by readers though. I could edit it right now to change the wording. Grafted is just how most people saw it, especially after the art and fics about him. But I'm kind of convinced most helmsman aren't positioned that way. It parallels Signless' position, and that's why I'm thinking he probably refused to take any other. If he can't die for Signless, then he will take suffering upon himself for him instead. Until I see other helmsman, that's what I'm assuming.
