“STAY STRONG”

Hengone and La Steez

Flama, “a digital network created by, for and starring young Latinos,” says this is the mural that set them on the quest to find the best Selena mural around Los Angeles. Painted in the heat of summer at Echo Park Ave. and Sunset Blvd. Hengone and La Steez said they took this project on as a “freebie” for the community when the previous mural was vandalized. Using the likenesses of Frida Kahlo, Dolores Huerta, and Selena Quintanilla they went on to say “We thought that if we made something that was a source of pride in the community, writers [taggers] would leave it alone.” Labor leader and civil rights activist Huerta, perhaps less recognizable to many, was the cofounder of the National Farmworkers Association and has received such notable awards as the Eugene V. Debs Foundation Outstanding American Award, the U.S. Presidential Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. @hengone @la_steez @theflama  @scenesfromthesidewalk
