Lili has learned over the last few months that Henri doesn't like being touched, and she isn't going to try and force him to. She would love to hold his hand, tuck his hair behind his ear, kiss his cheek the way he had several months ago. But she isn't going to. Just seeing his face is enough. Seeing his smile start coming to him easier than before makes each day worth it. She knows there is still so much he's fighting in his mind that keeps him up for days on end, exhaustion lining his face until he has no choice but to collapse, and she wishes, oh how she wishes, she could hold him and cradle his head in her lap and brush his hair off his forehead. She wants to help him feel better.
She isn't going to impede on his personal comfort, however. The pace he sets is what he needs, and Lili feels perfectly fine following it.
"Henri?" she says quietly as she walks softly past his room and sees the light still on and, through the crack in the door where it's been left open, him sitting at his desk. The knock she taps on the door is gentle, only enough to get his attention. "Are you alright? It's late."
she is nothing if not respectful. she is nothing if not polite. she is, with an almost alarming consistently, attentive to his every need— far more than her own, he’s come to suspect. and though her affection for him is clear even at a well-practiced distance, a part of him still wonders if his growing love for her is— could ever truly be— right.
he is, a t last, becoming used to her presence over his shoulder, at his side, though it’s taken weeks for him to stop jumping at shadows, to stop himself from sitting up expectantly through half the night. she’s noticed this, too, he wagers. and that’s why she’s come to check on him, to ask why he’s awake so late this time. for once, it isn’t old habits or fresh fears that are keeping him awake. no, it is actually something of a labor of love this time.
“ lili? ” he asks, turning in his chair to face the tiny crack in the door, though he already knows who it is. he smiles, huffing a quiet laugh to himself. “ you may come in. ”, he teases and the smile shifts slightly into something more akin to a grin. a second later, the door crack widens. he sets his work aside and shifts his chair, gesturing to another beside his desk, an invitation for her to take it once she’s let herself in.
“ you needn’t worry. for once, i can assure you i am still awake of my own volition. ”
