The Not so Purrfect Crime...
A Tacoma, Wash. man has been charged with insurance fraud and
attempted theft for faking his cat's death after a car accident to cash
in on a $20,000 insurance claim, the Associated Press reports.
More than two years after being involved in a minor traffic accident,
Yevgeniy Samsonov came back to the insurance company to turn in a
claim for his beloved cat "Tom", who Samsonov claimed had tragically
died in the accident.
The insurer sent Samsonov a check for $50 to compensate him for the
cat, but Samsonov said Tom "had been like a son to him." Therefore,
given the intense sentimental value of the cat, he wanted $20,000.
Not only had Samsonov, never even owned a cat, but the picture of his
"beloved" cat was actually a top image The Associated Press found on
Google images when running a generic search for "white cat" which
was actually a feature image on a Wikipedia page dedicated to cats —

When Pemco refused to pay the $20,000 and revoked the original
check for $50, Samsonov contacted the state insurance commissioner's
office, asking the agency to advocate for him!
So, let me get this straight — it took this guy over two years to dream
up this story, he pulled a top image off the Internet, the most clever
name he could think of for his cat In two years was "Tom" — and he
thinks the Insurance Commission should have his back on fighting this
claim?
