sleep has once more been eluding him and he’s not too sure if he’ll be getting more than three hours tonight. he stares back at the book spines staring at him on his night table, contemplating which one he would want to fall asleep to and feature in his dreams, ones that he wouldn’t remember come morning. however, the faint buzzing and the following text tone from his mobile distracts him from the inevitable decision of ‘the catcher in the rye’. 

unused to receiving text messages at... 1am (well, he’s a little used to it, but he’s told bragging about it isn’t in good taste) demetrius warily checks the number, but then a little too pleased to find he recognises just who it is. 

sliding the notification to view the message, the simple words featured prominently in the text box lift off the screen and echo in his ears in her very voice, as though she’s right beside him whispering into his ear. 

what did it mean, exactly? she missed him... in what way? they had seen each other a couple days ago when their shifts coincided. and, anyways, demetrius is not too sure that she’d be that sentimental. which brings him to other connotations and motives, some he’s all too willing to answer to with; “i can be there in about 15 minutes.’ he feels a response is needed sooner rather than later. as he understands texting etiquette especially in this instance might require a prompt reply. that is, if he wanted to open up this avenue of discussion. 

finally, he texts back; 

[ sms: erica ] -- must be under the influence to be talking like that. is that supposed to be an invitation? 

coy as always and open-ended. if erica chose to carry on this dance of... what did she refer it as... yes, delayed gratification then, the catcher in the rye it would be.

                    she knows she should go to her mother  ---  wants to go to her mother, in fact. but the autumn leaves are only now blooming; persephone knows far better than to return to her mother when the world is on the cusp of death. the devastation of leaving again would only make the coming winter more brutal. she cannot risk that, cannot plunge the world into a deeper frost than the one she feels building. the earth itself SCREAMS for her touch, for her to revive it, but the queen has other things to concern herself with, things jarringly more important than the drying grass at her feet.

                    persephone grits her teeth together, her nerves making her want to scream. but she says nothing, lowers her head so the hood of her disguise covers her face deeply in shadow. the palace has never been a location she frequents; no one servants would recognize her. “ your majesty, ” she says to her aunt, head bowed just enough to show respect but not DEFERENCE. hera would recognize this at the very least. or so the queen hopes. the bundle in her arms starts to coo, showing the first signs of stirring. “ i would prefer we meet in private. ”

  Rhea stayed quiet, studying her youngest daughter. She couldn’t just shake her head and reject the accusation made by Hera. It was true, she did let her mother down. And not just once but many times. No mother wanted to be disappointed by their children’s actions and hoped they could take another route instead of pride and vengeance when facing their issues. Innocent people, even if Hera didn’t view them that way, were hurt and traumatized and in some cases, children had grow up faster than they should have.

  Rhea often found herself tending to Zeus’s illegitmate children. She understood her daughter’s anger and pain that Zeus caused by his affairs but she never once agreed with the treatment of the children born from wedlock. Rhea cared for all children especially those who were cast as outsiders. The Mother of the Gods took no bias to the circumstances of their creations. It was often they were the ones who needed her most.

  The titaness couldn’t control her daughter nor would she, but there had to be another way to deal with these affairs. One suggestion seemed obvious; however, that wasn’t Rhea’s decision and neither her place to suggest it.   

 “I’m disappointed. I can not lie about that,” Rhea began, “But the real question is did you let yourself down? Do you feel what you have done is justified? This is a cycle I am not proud to watch over and over again. How many more lives? How many more are you willing to risk? I  want to believe you are better than this but I’m not sure I can anymore. Prove me wrong, Hera. I don’t want to have this conversation again...and I hope you agree with me.”
