thinking about the Watchful MYNs again. there's the way love stories haunt the narrative from day one, and then the other thing that haunts the narrative is failure.
in the earlier cases there's this lack of resolution. this is supposed to be the detective storyline, you're on the hunt for the truth, surely a case should end with gaining some clarity and in a way, you do. you find the person, or you discover what happened to them and (sometimes) why. but you never find out enough to be certain. you never know how the Absconding Devil and his singer fared, and whether they'd be better off in another version of this story. you never know if you made the right choice with the Comtessa.
and then in the University chapter, you can get to the bottom of things. you find out things you were never supposed to know, secrets of the Duchess and the Bazaar spelled out to you clearly. you can solve the murder. you can seek justice, to a degree. but you have to ruin yourself to see it through. this is the last Watchful Making Your Name story, it should end with you reaching some new height, some new recognition... and it does. but in one of the versions the thing you are recognized for is throwing all of your hard work away to pursue very imperfect justice. what does that have to do with perception, with being Watchful?
and I think the answer is that the Watchful MYNs aren't just about seeking knowledge, but also about what you choose to do with it, and the consequences you will face for it. it ends with the Honey-Addled Detective asking you, what are you doing this for?, and, yes, that's just what happens at the end of every MYN, it's an opportunity to boost your quirks or choose and alignment, but I think it fits really well here. just knowing something isn't the end all, be all. sometimes you have the answer and you still wonder. maybe sometimes you regret asking in the first place. you know.
