Fantastic and sobering day yesterday at Ocean Conservancy @ourocean #2018coastalcleanup, w/ major turnout at #DC #KingmanIsland & #HeritageIsland. The #Rowanator was a #weirdprize winner for the backpack/messenger bag (He found a nice snail shell & snake skin on the natural side of things. #plastics #marinedebris #fightplastics #resilience #precovery #precoverymindset To be clear, the fantastic part is the turnout of so many people and the operation managed by OC and partners. What was sobering was the sheer amount of garbage, mostly plastics, in/near the water. In just over an hour and a half we collected bags full, using the #CleanSwell app to record. But there was so much floating out of reach from shore, so many thousands and thousand of pieces of styrofoam disguised as leaves all along the shore. Tiny plastics imbedding everywhere, a bottle cap becoming one with tree roots. The pics cannot do the severity justice. This is just ONE site, on ONE river, in ONE city, near our ONE bay... the bay to the ocean. Our ONE giant ocean, filling with plastics and debris.
