Het Droste Effect - Lollita Can Dance
7 times maximum bang for the buck
Here's a list of 7 sources (and then some) of mostly free or (don't) pay what you want music that I enjoyed a lot. Feel free to download and to support the bands and labels, they're doing good work. It's really surprising how many great acts are giving their digital releases away for free and how good they often are, sometimes even groundbreaking and mind-boggling and tantalizing to the bone.
Throatruiner Records This small but active French label has an international roster of mostly killer acts operating on the extreme frontiers of 'core and death/black/doom/sludge metal. I particularily enjoyed the latest offerings by Nesseria, As We Draw, Vuyvr and Plebeian Grandstand but Vermin Womb or Portestant were capable of turning some heads as well.
Deathseekers - DTHSKRS This blackened/dark/heavy/metallic/whathaveyou style of hardcore is without a doubt le goût du jour for the kids, but in the mass of new (pseudo)-releases the pickings are slim when it comes down to truly hair raising grimness or aggression you can believe in. These songs were some of the few that achieved that for me.
Landskap - II A bunch of DOOM veterans replacing the traditional genre-bound weight of the world with some more soothing propositions without letting go of the tonality nor groove they're so familiar with. Stuff to listen on those grey days you know the sun can flare up any time and make it all worthwhile again.
Humo Del Cairo - EP2-Imaginario Humo Del Cairo (who's excellent, may I say classic, debut album is free to DL as well) embarked on a series of exploratory EP's this year. The first one didn't excite me much but this recently released second instalment drew me in from the get go, in true prog fashion it consists of one long track divided in movements which explore some harsher sounds as well as some droning to end in well known Pampas heavy psych fashion.
Marathon Of Dope records Tom De Geeter aka Speed Dial 7 keeps releasing interesting stuff firmly rooted in hip hop culture but soundwise borrowing from all of the electronical music spectrum all the while keeping an eye on what's moving in the indie and singersongwriter's scenes. His own productivity resulted this year in a crazy ass mix album, a semi-acoustic off putting collection of songs, a collaborative pure hiphop record and a promising first EP of his newest project together with Mike Ladd and his ZD bandmate. And as if that wasn't enough to tickle your ears he released also some fascinating stuff by his rap associates Birdapres and Rob Crooks, frankly those two take the MOD crown for 2014. The latter with his "Downtown '09" Ep and the former with his Gray Jay produced album "If And Only If" but please do check it all out.
Het Droste Effect - We Are All Hallucinating After a few years of silence these Dutch cats are back treating us, duller mortals, to fascinating psych journeys in and out of our minds. Also don't miss out on the collaborative effort with compatriots Radar Men From The Moon (whose third album was a bit of let down but be sure to check their first two)
My Brother The Wind - Live at Roadburn 2013 For the last one in this list we stay with the psychonauts and the jamcats, this is My Brother The Wind's wholly improvised set from the trendsetting Roadburn festival. You may or may not know this but since many years most of the RB live sets are recorded and streamed for the masses afterwards. Some selected sets receive an offical release handled by affiliate label Burning World Records. All these recordings are top notch and since no self-respecting band wants to deliver anything than it's best possible performance at Roadburn these releases are generally very enjoyable. The sweet deal is that since I dunno exactly when all of the "Live at Roadburn" series is freely downloadable from the Burning World Bandcamp, go cop I'd say.
honourable mentions: Deathrite (Swedeathcore, cuts deep), Witch hunter records (sludge, DOOM & hardcore), Smimooz (Brussels based hip hop producer/rapper with legendary status in de Belgian underground for his 9mm records releases), A389 records, Iron Bonehead records, Halo Of Flies, Bones Brigade, Selfmadegod, Pagan, Kaotoxin, Grave Mistake, Xtreem, Dark Descent & Alerta Antifascista for their kick ass rosters and modestly priced, if not free, digital releases)
This is so gorgeous - Het Droste Effect "Deluded & derangec" #shoegaze #dreampop #reverb @HetDrosteEffect
Het Droste Effect - We Are All Hallucinating
Het Droste Effect hacen stoner/ psych/ space rock, temas instrumentales y sonidos atmosféricos, llenos de toques prog, shoegaze, stoner-desert, kraut, drone y fuzz rock.

Listen/purchase: We Are All Hallucinating by Het Droste Effect A new ep by Het Droste Effect, their first 2 were top notch instry heavy psych, think Monomyth, Colour Haze, Monkey3 etc but with an added sence of joy and playfulness. These cats are one of the rare acts in the current festival of free bandcamp releases I keep returning to every so often.
