"Angel Wing Clam" (Crytopleura costata)
...a species of Pholadid bivalve that occurs in shallow seas in the north west Atlantic Ocean, ranging between Cape Cod and the Gulf of Mexico. They also occur in the West Indies, Central America and South America south to Brazil. C. costata spends most of its live buried deep beneath the surface of the sea floor, with only its siphon exposed, allowing it to filter the water around it for nutrients without exposing itself to predators. By using its pointed anterior end C. costata can bore through sand, wood, clay, and even soft rock by using a twisting motion.
