Her words were simple, clipped fragments of what, coming from another person, might have been construed as comfort. But from her they were fact, a rare display of solidarity ( if the one interpreting them was optimistic. ) ❛ Us girls have to stick together. ❜ Her dark eyes meet the vibrant blues of the younger girls, and she purses her lips, studying the features of her tribute. Scrawny, but pretty. She could have fire in her eyes — she could just be scared. But there was something Zenaida read in her that she felt gave Cressida an edge. Most tributes from the career districts were fighters, most Careers themselves she respected, attempted to help. But she always had a closer bond with the female tributes, always pushed for them a little more. Valued their success more. Hated them less. ❛ People will devalue you because you’re small. You’re conventionally beautiful. You’re a girl. They’ll expect you to charm them, look nice, die tragically so they can tut and dab away crocodile tears before cheering for the next one. My advice to you? ❜ A pause. ❛ Don’t trust alliances as much as we push. They expect you to die too. ❜
