The Grass by Jeffrey Yang. 2017. Poetry Magazine.
Jeffrey Yang is a poet and translator based in New York, USA. Yang is known most prominently as a translator of Liu Xaibo’s works, and also works as an editor at New Directions and the New York Review of Books. His works are invested in the “the image and the movement of images...connected to the lyric impulse”, and his images of the natural world do not oppose but are rather exist in symbiosis with the built world.
The Grass appears in Yang’s latest collection of poems Hey, Marfa (2018) - a collection of works centred around Marfa, an arts hub in Texas. In this work, Yang interrogates an image of the grasslands which plays across boundaries of both structure and language.
