(1/2) im almost 21 and for my entire life havent been able to lose weight - i used to get great grades when i was younger and was always told i was smart - my mom got really sick my senior yr of high school and she was someone i relied on the most in life - after she got sick i gained weight, my grades dropped and so did my study habits and work ethic over the next three years - ppl can say ive still accomplished a lot but i feel like ive changed into a lazier, less passionate
(2/2) version of myself - im not even there for my mom as much as i want to be (she had brain damage that year) - there are so many good people i know and i have amazing siblings all younger and i dont think im setting a good example for them - and i know i need to take care of myself and being healthy which then will make me a better role model to look up to and b a better friend - i just keep feeling haunted by my past - im losing my friends and the person i used to be -any thoughts or advice? hii, i just messaged you about like my mom getting sick, me gaining weight, being really fatalistic etc. but i was just thinking - like maybe a solution is to rediscover the things i've been passionate about again - i know i do care about things but it's hard to remember that you are passionate about hobbies and activities and certain disciplines when the world often makes it feel like those things dont matter-idk im just sad ive let it get to the pt where disinterest has cut so far deep into me
i dont think having a standard of perfection is going to help you feel accomplished or good. i think you are setting a good example for your siblings by stepping up during a really difficult life situation bc the most important thing a child can see is HOW a person they respect perseveres through really complex situations. it is important that they see you be defeated, cry, feel hopeless----but going on. moving forward. life is never going to be easy for anyone, i promise you this. we need to prepare the people we love for how to move forward when everything around you is falling apart and that’s the example you’re setting for your siblings. Your priorities have shifted, as often is the case with adulthood but i hope you dont feel any shame about asking for help. Caring for a brain damaged parent myself, i absolutely know the emotional, spiritual, financial toll that this one event takes, and that’s not even including the time commitment. My friends were also not supportive but that’s not something i could fault them for; no one wants to give up having fun for helping someone recover and i understand that i cant rely on people to give me the validation i need to move forward. I think it would really help you to find a new group of friends in the form of a support group for caretakers bc it would be people with similar priorities and it would give you an example of how to also move forward, how to make things work.
Absolutely, if you have professional help like a therapist, please bring this topic up to them. You are also going through an intense grieving process that you need help understanding and moving forward through.
I will leave you with this; we all lose the people we “were” but that is only to make room for the people we are becoming. You are always yourself, now you are just becoming a more refined and raw version of yourself. Everyone will change; do not punish yourself for also going through the most natural process in the world.
You look like a gremlin
