So, I am watching Thor again, and I realized, he has ZERO lines in Hiddleston's first few scenes (his kid counterpart does, but thats not Hiddleston) anyway, at what point did you start to like, empathize with the guy? how many times did you watch Thor before you realized Loki was a victim? Is The Thor movie the first time you saw Loki and understood him? or was it another movie, like Avengers? anyway, pls, infodump everthing, I love it when you do that
*sigh* The reason I took so long to answer this is because i had to mentally prepare for it. I am now sitting in a comfy chair with a cat and a hot beverage and I am ready as I’ll ever be
Loki is a character that you can’t read him based solely off of what he is saying and/or doing. He is quiet and fairly reserved, especially in the first Thor movie (which gives us what he would have been like previous to any of what we see in the movies, so this was previously the “norm” for Loki).
When you look at Loki as a character in Thor, you see him being quite, fairly reserved, almost afraid to speak out or say anything that might offend someone. And this is where, I think, a lot of fanfiction written to take place before or during Thor has Loki very ooc. Yes he is a trickster, yes he plays pranks and yes he can be a little sneaky. But before everything that happened in Thor and with his time in the captivity of Thanos and then New York, TDW because of losing his mother, he wasn’t quite as brash. That was more so a result of what had happened to him as well as his location. He was no longer under the watchful eye of Odin and trying to be a “good son” so to speak. He knew he had lost favour. He knew he was in the doghouse. So why try to please them anymore? Sorry I’m getting off topic.
But that brings us to the other things about Loki, he is a people pleaser. And we see this because of many things. We see that he never had favour with anyone, and I mean anyone, but his mother. Maybe Thor cared for him but we see that Thor was very strong willed and pigheaded before the events of Thor. Even if he cared, he didn’t show it. He didn’t show that he cared at all and since he didn’t show it, all his words and actions were all that more degrading to loki, who didn’t see Thor as having respect or care for him.
Anyways that’s off topic from your question. Like I said you really do have to pay very close attention. Remember when they came back from Jotenheim and Loki talked about how the guards should have acted faster because he told them to get help because what they were doing was stupid. Yeah, remember how those guard took so long???? That comes from everybody’s lack of respect for Loki. The warriors sure as hell don’t respect him, the guards and servants don’t respect him, Thor doesn’t respect him. But where does all that stem from? Hmmm, maybe the one person who knew Loki was not of asgardian heritage and probably treated him as such? Loki was never meant to see the throne. He was a pawn in Odin’s chess game. So he was likely passed over and shown less respect by Odin because of that. And hey, if they all father doesn’t care if we don’t listen to his son, who is a prince, why would we bother to treat him like we have to treat Thor? Oh yeah. We don’t. Plus, being strong and a warrior was valued highly in Asgard, from what we can see. Loki was bookish and focused more on his magic than his physical training. But this doesn’t mean Loki isn’t a highly skilled warrior, but he is light on his feet and he fights with his daggers, he is agile and not a huge force on the battlefield which likely also contributed to the warriors lack of respect.
You’ve heard my rant on why Odin is an asshole and why Loki was mislead and why his reactions and actions in Thor 1 all the way to TDW are in character and it was a long time in the coming so I’ll spare you that.
Now to actually address your question of when I started to sympathize or care for him. I was in the marvel fandom before I had actually watched any of the movies, I started off by reading fanfiction. So within that, I heard people’s opinions, good and bad, before I had even seen the content for myself. I had read in depth character posts and rants so when I finally watched the films I think I had a bit of a different perspective. I saw him the way that fandom had shown me. I saw the things that they talked about. I already knew the plot so I focused on on the characters a lot. And like I said, with Loki it’s more than what he says. It’s what others say and do to him, and how we see that effecting him.
