Hi! I have read to much about that high note at the end of the phantom of the opera. Some says that a few actress are allowed to sing it, others that is recorded in case that the actress doesn’t feel in the “mood” and others says that all the time they use the pre recorded note. What is your opinion? And what you know about it?
The title song cadenza and the high E at the end of it are always pre-recorded. At least in the replica productions. It’s done mainly because the actors have to get up to the ‘bridge’ and back into the boat. All that running around would probably equal some weird breathing into the mics and background noise that would take away from the number. There have definitely been Christine’s who have sung over their tracks though so that the lip-syncing would be believable. The two that come to mind are Dale Kristien and Amy Manford. I believe I recall hearing that at least sometimes they sang along with the track.
Now non-replicas can be different. Most have at least that recorded as well, though I’m sure there’s been a few with shorter ones that may have opted to do it live. A lot of times though the rest of the song they sing live in non-replicas. But again, in some non-replicas they’re not moving around as much as the original version of the show, so they can sing it live without a ton of background noise.
