That’s awesome! Congratulations! I ran a 5k last October in Cincinnati and it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, so that’s really awesome that you did a 10k. You deserve to be lazy for the rest of the day if you want.
Go you! I'd say that the first time I ran a 5k was definitely harder than what I did this morning. Going from not!running to running! is a much, much tougher journey than working up from running! to more!running.

Hey, America, I’d like to take this time to high-five you for doing the right thing again last night. We came together and, for one moment, made the right decision for President. By all appearances - and in any other kind of election - Barack Obama should not have won his reelection bid. Employment is still high. The economy is growing a slower-than-we-would-like pace. Jobs are not being created at the same way they were tossed aside back in 2008 and 2009. But, he was the best choice for the country right now.
His policies haven’t always been popular and they were the cause of numerous discussions about just how terrible he actually is (he isn’t). In the end, they righted the ship and do have us on the right course, we’re just taking the scenic route. His unpopular auto industry bailout saved the industry and all the jobs that come with it. Obamacare is going to keep people alive and healthy. Wars started under false pretenses are being wound down and those soldiers are slowly returning home (although, to be fair, the Drone Wars continue on with the guys operating them acting as if it’s just another game of Modern Warfare). He’s cut taxes for nearly everyone in the country and it’s helped us all.
The alternative would have merely sunk us into oblivion using outdated and disproven methods for dealing with the issues. Let’s cut taxes and cut our revenue streams while somehow lowering the deficit! Let’s bomb everyone Arab country that looks at us wrong! The banks need to have the ability to do whatever they want so we need to remove all traces of regulation! If you cannot afford healthcare, well, in the words of Nelson Muntz - ha ha!
Normally people say, “Look, I think Mitt Romney is probably a nice guy, he’s just got the wrong ideas.” But I cannot even say that. I do not see a sincere bone in that man’s body. Politicians are notoriously wishy-washy and change positions over their careers but he takes the cake for being a spineless amoeba. Never have I seen a politician - and his lapdog Paul Ryan - so blatantly lie and pander to potential voters. Never. Politicians inflate the truth and bend it as well but few will outright lie, look you in the face, and say, “And?” Paul Ryan’s RNC speech was so full of outright lies that people in the media just gave up and chose five big lies to disprove (easily) as opposed to pick his speech apart. Romney “reset” his campaign three times in the last six months alone! He went from a severe conservative to a moderate in the span of a single debate. After he had pandered and lied his way to the nomination, he turned into what I think is his more realistic self - a moderate conservative. That’s fine but if one has to turn into an extremist in order to win a party’s nomination it says a great deal about the man as well as the party.
Speaking of the party, if the GOP does not change its current trajectory, they will be doomed to the scrapheap of history. The current party of closet racists, rape-defenders, woman-hating, out of touch older white men is just not going to fly in the future. Many articles written after last night’s outcome are touching on this - this was essentially the final time the party could rely and court the “white vote” reliably because that demographic is rapidly shrinking. Their voters are older and white. New voters are younger and multiracial. The writing is on the wall and if they do not take heed, we may see the GOP turn into the Whig party and just disappear. The first steps the GOP should take is to marginalize and push out the extremists. The wave of Tea Party dipshits that rolled into office in 2010 has proven to be an anvil around their necks because they’re holding their own party hostage because they refuse to compromise. Luckily, many of those imbeciles were defeated last night and they’ll disappear into the mists of ignorance from whence they came.
I think the GOP should really tone back on their time-honored tradition of blaming everyone else for the fact that things are bad in their points of view. “Illegals” are why there’s any violence anywhere in the US. “They gays” are why marriage is failing despite the divorce rate rising long before marriage equality was put on any ballot. “The terrorists” are why we need to keep building our defense up and bomb whoever we want. “Blacks” and affirmative action are the reason why Timmy McWhite couldn’t get into college and also why welfare exists in the first place. Sound logic unless you point out that demographically white people in rural areas of the country - who always solidly vote against their own interests - are the largest recipients of welfare benefits. “Democrats and their taxes” are why there are no jobs despite capitalism being built on the premise of finding the cheapest way to produce a good and then charge a profit for it. What’s the cheapest way to produce a good? Build it in China. Companies willingly ship jobs out because it helps their bottom line and gives Wall St. a chubby.
Ultimately, it’d help if the GOP showed any inclination to work with the other side on legislation and moving forward. Obama has dealt with unheard of obstruction since he took office. McConnell said on day one that their goal was to make Obama a 1-term president. If that doesn’t scream out, “I’m going to be a petulant dick for the hell of it!” then I don’t know what does. The American people spoke last night and they said that Obama is the choice and they expect everyone to work together. Obama has made good strides in the last few years despite it all and I expect that he’ll be able to make more now that the GOPs “party first” platform fell flat on its face. We will see how it all works out, but, I would hope that the GOP realizes it’s time to do what the hell they were put in office to do and that’s fix this country and work with our President. If not, they’ll continue to lose support and simply become more isolated and out of touch.
I guess now the only thing we can do is wait to see how this all plays out.
