What better way to usher in a Friday than with The Prez (Lester Young) and the Teddy Wilson Quartet? This single layer SACD (playable only on SACD equipped machines) is in glorious mono, but with all the tone of Young's tenor sax presented in as wonderful a fashion as I've heard. The six tunes on this 1956 recording give all concerned the chance to stretch out and play. Both Young and Wilson (who demonstrates here why he was in such demand) are in fine form. Yes, that s late in Lester's career, when being able to capture him properly was much more difficult, but Norman Granz always seemed to have a way of eliciting the best from Young, as is evidenced here. One listen to the way Young plays here will give you the perfect setting for where west coast cool jazz got its start. And what can be said about Wilson that hasn't already been noted. He plays with both a precision and over all sense of joy that marked his playing. While you know there are other musicians playing here, they rarely get to step forward and make themselves known, as this is a Young / Wilson show. Easing into my Sunday morning with Rimsky-Korsacov’s “Scheherazade” by Von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmonicer via Tidal MQA through Audirvana Pro 3. 24/96 and sounding wonderful. The system sounds superb today (OK, everyday, but today especially) playing this classical warhorse. But it’s been one of my favorites since I was in short pants. While I still prefer the Reiner version on RCA, Von Karajan offered decent tempos and stuffs the work full of drama and tension while not losing the story telling feel.
