An Absence Felt by Hightide Hotel
Head North
after a long absence, i guess here’s some... pop punk. *shrug*
I found ‘Head North’ via their split with one of my favorite bands ‘Microwave’.
I’ve posted some of my favorite of their lyrical snippets from their album ‘Scrapbook Minds’ which I’m really impressed with.
The album reminds me of an odd mix of possible influences. In approximate order: ‘The Dangerous Summer’, ‘Hightide Hotel’, ‘Rise Against’, ‘Real Friends’, ‘The Wonder Years’. [just as a comparative reference]
I’ve really appreciated the lyrics which center around the common themes of nostalgia, progress, and bad relationships that Hightide Hotel’s ‘Naturally’ seemed to be dealing with and which the genre as a whole is steeped in. They’re well done; descriptive, clever, and simple, while following the classic song structure.
The use of image and metaphor (particularly the ‘fog’ from ‘jake’s apartment’ and the namesake ‘scrapbook mind’ mentioned in ‘endeavors’), the integrated theme of progress, and how they relate, and the inter-referencing really tie it together really nicely.
Musically, the voice is a strong mix of singing ability and stylistic raspy shouting (the dangerous summer-esque) and the occasional complex guitar licks in the background keep it interesting behind the dominant drums and chunky power chords.
I’d love to see more of the complexity in the guitars come out and some of the more pop-y aspects of the punk give way to a more subdued ‘tigers jaw’ and ‘hightide hotel’ emo. definitely keep the uplifting elements of the choruses, though.
great work, guys, if this gets to you.
i was thinking of you and i was spittin' at sunsets i was thinking of leaving here for good
