#FindYourWay on a BLM-managed National Trail with new storymap
This year the Bureau of Land Management, alongside multiple agencies and nonprofit organizations, will celebrate the creation of the National Trails System by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968.
There are currently 30 congressionally designated National Scenic and Historic Trails within the National Trails System, and BLM manages nearly 6,000 miles of 18 designated trails within 15 states. National Scenic Trails provide outdoor recreation opportunities as well as conservation of significant geographic characteristics, such as desert lands and forests.
Find your next trail adventure on BLM-managed public lands! Through the BLM.gov website, you can view all the recreation activities that are available in particular trails areas, as well as lists contact information to learn more about the trails.
National Historic Trails, though often scenically appealing and with multiple recreation opportunities, aim to preserve the original routes with travel of national historic significance. The BLM notably manages more miles of National Historic Trails than any other federal land management agency.
As the 50th anniversary approaches, the BLM invites you to connect, explore and discover new special areas located within the BLM's National Scenic and Historic Trails through an ESRI story map, "Authentic Adventures on BLM-Managed Trails." This story map highlights 50 notable sites and segments within the National Trails System, and features a brief background on the site or segment location, a photograph and a link to the relevant recreation info page to find out more.
