The dirt road which is now Manhattan Avenue gave Green Point every aspect of a tiny New England village. It was the market place, and each morning the Long Island farmers lined the roadside from Ash to Huron streets with their produce. This section, called "Irishtown", was sparsely settled mostly with one-story buildings. Every family had a flock of geese and at least two goats. There was a pound at the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Kent Street where all stray animals, such as cows and pigs, were kept until their owners could claim them.
