1500, the barbershop

There are few things in life as controversial as a woman with long hair cutting it all off, especially if she a woman of color. Her family will invariably take offense as if they had nurtured each strand personally. Her coworkers will ask if there has been a personal tragedy. Her partner may ask if she has taken leave of her senses entirely. Still, she cuts.

My hair was towards the middle of my back when I birthed my son. It was beautiful, he was beautiful, everything was beautiful. But as time went on I realized that my hair was stealing from me. It stole my rest when I chose to comb it instead of napping. It stole my confidence when I couldn’t find the time to style it before work everyday. It stole my health when I couldn’t reach under the thick strands to shampoo properly. Today, I decided to take back what my hair stole from me. With each snip of the scissors I took back my health, my rest, my confidence, my HAPPINESS y’all.

I am not my hair. Though it be a part of me, it it can never be all of me. I left my strands on the barbershop floor, and despite the gawking, the awkward questions, and the wailing of my mother, I am content. I found myself when I let go of what of what others thought of me. Here’s to never letting go of me again.
