Gandalf big naturals, but Hobitit (1993)
In the 80s and early 90s, your fantasy movie wasn’t a fantasy unless most of your cast had hair like a cartoon character who’d stuck a finger into a wall socket. For some reason, we all accepted that fantasy times would have to involve hair with so much Aqua Net that it moved like florist’s wire. Sometimes it could be pretty, like Sarah and Jareth at the ball in Labyrinth, but mostly it was a lot of extras with basically this:
Anyway, the Finnish Lord of the Rings is pretty delightful in its way
the definitive Gandalf ranking
(I will only be ranking movie/TV designs of Gandalf the Grey)
1. Gandalf from the 1985 teleplay The Fabulous Journey of Mr. Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit
This Gandalf has a long beard, thigh high boots, weird eyebrows, and glitter on his cheeks. What else could you need? 9.75/10 for not having a funny hat
2. Gandalf from the 1978 Bakshi film The Lord of the Rings
This Gandalf is amazing, he has a big hat, a big beard, and even bigger robes. Also his facial expressions crack me up. 9.5/10 for being mostly blue
3. Gandalf from the 1977 Rankin/Bass film The Hobbit
This Gandalf has the best eyebrows anyone will ever see, a styled beard, a nice and pointy nose, and a lovely little hood. 9.25/10 for having a cool shot of him in front of lightning
4. Gandalf from the 2001-2003 Peter Jackson film trilogy The Lord of the Rings
This Gandalf is truly Grey and has the wandering look down to a t: the belt, the bag, and most importantly the pipe in his staff. 9/10 for his short beard
5. Gandalf from the 1967 Gene Deitch film The Hobbit
This Gandalf is simple yet striking, he has his signature long beard and a funny little thing on his head. 7/10 for wearing just one big sheet
6. Gandalf from the 1993 TV series Hobitit
This Gandalf has the hair and mustache, yet lacks the overall outfit. (also I couldn't find a picture of it) 5/10 for being basic and bland
7. Gandalf from the 1991 teleplay Khraniteli
This Gandalf is odd but not in a good way, the best thing about his design are his bangs. 3/10 for putting in minimal effort
Frodo in baggy pants

It’s a Russian Teleplay adaptation of Lord of the Rings with absolutely Perfect special effects (the hobbits are the size of rabbits!)
This adaptation PREDATES the obscure Finnish minsieries adaptation by two years!! (check out my #hobitit and #hobitit hot takes tag if you don’t know what I’m talking about!)
If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I LOVE baffling obscure Lord of the Rings adaptations so much but I’d never even heard of this one!!!!?? How have I never heard of it??
I guess that makes this the *actual* first live-action adaptation of Lord of the Rings?? (Unless there’s yet another even MORE secret obscure adaptation I don’t know about?)
All this time I thought Hobitit was the first live-action adaptation of Lord of the Rings but it wasn’t!!!!??????? My entire world is upside-down.....the world has changed, I feel it in the earth, I feel it in the water, I smell it in the air.........this is big news.....I can’t wait til I have time to watch it. I guess I’ll have to learn Russian though since there don’t seem to be English subtitles yet XD
Can we please talk about 1993 samurai Boromir and his awesome head tattoo
Let's play a fun game of Guess that Member of the Fellowship!
Everyone's from a Finnish lotr miniseries called Hobitit (the Hobbits) from 1993. You can find it with english subs on youtube - it's so bad that it's good.
