Alexocution: Wrestling with Baby Hats
Earlier today, Jasmine read up about the doljanchi, "a Korean tradition that celebrates the first birthday of a baby“, after seeing something on Reddit about the unusual way Koreans apparently keep track of people’s ages--that is, that babies are 1 when they’re born, and that number increases on the first day of each year. As someone who is ethnically half-Korean, I gotta say this makes very little sense to me, but I won’t judge.
I just looked this up, and it seems like this isn’t limited to Korea, but is a thing in several east Asian countries. Interesting.
Anyway, the doljanchi involves dressing up the baby in traditional Korean dress, and it’s cute. Jasmine looked up the hats after hearing me say that they looked cute. One of the hats, a hat for boys called a hogeon, provides some interesting results when searched for in Hangul (호건). See for yourself:

You should see some pictures of babies wearing the little hats. You should also see a famous wrestler known as Hulk Hogan. I imagine someone seeing this link would be quite confused about the juxtaposition of the Korean babies and a red-faced wrestler. The reason for this, at least according to what Jasmine and I theorized, is that hogeon is the Korean pronunciation of the wrestler’s name.
