Knights Templar
The Knights Templar were a medieval Christian military organization that was established in the 12th century. They were among the most well-known of the Western Christian military orders, and their valor and gallantry were much admired. The order was founded to guard Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land and to defend the Kingdom of Jerusalem from Muslim invasion.
The order had thousands of knights and countless fortresses at its heyday, as well as immense riches and influence. Because of their riches and power, both secular and religious authorities were envious, and in 1307, King Philip IV of France, with the help of the Pope, ordered the arrest and torture of the Templars. The Pope abolished the order in 1312, and its members were either killed or scattered throughout Europe.
Despite their catastrophic conclusion, the Knights Templar's legacy lives on to this day. They are recognized for their courage and devotion to their cause, as well as their financial inventions and contributions to the establishment of the contemporary banking system.
