Have been cooking these all morning. Today is my Wife’s birthday, so I made her years worth. .. I won’t tell you readers her exact age, because I value my life! But, it took the whole day, so you get the idea 😬. These wafer-like cookies are her favorite childhood snack that she used to get back home. I bought the Pizzelle style molds when I visited her country- more as a souvenir . When asked to make these cookies when we got home- It seemed daunting, and I would come up with a million reasons not to, and ultimately bought ready made ones at a south East Asian bakery, when they’re available. The name for these cookies- ‘Kuih Kapit’ translates to love letter. I see now why; This is a labor of love. It burns, it is finicky, it is fragile, demands your undivided attention( cooked over the flame, one at a time), timing has to be just right, it’s messy, and takes forever to prepare( and consumed/gone in minutes).. But once it’s all done, they’re beautiful, and delicious. For my Wife- it’s being transcended back home. I made these today, because I am working towards being a better husband for her, and a better person for myself. Currently, I might not be making as much as I use to and able to take my Wife to lavish places without flinching. While sweating over making the Kuih, they reminded me that love isn’t currency, places&things; It’s about having empathy, connection, devotion, patience, and persevering no matter what. It’s about showing up. Seeing her munch on these smiling back at me fills my heart with so much warmth. I also put small messages with edible paper and ink, with gratitude and reasons why I love my Wife in each Kuih. Even had fun changing it up, adding another one of our mutually loved ingredients; Matcha from Japan. Recipe needed adjusting but I made it work. Now the recipe is like us; Malaysian-Japanese-American. They’re far from perfect, but I gave my all for them and feeling content. Grateful for this journey we are on, my love. Wishing you a Happy birthday! -Thank you all for reading.
