Toothpaste adventures
The house was a bit chilly this morning so it was pretty much impossible to squeeze the homemade toothpaste out of the tube. I took that as my cue to do a bit more research and tweak the recipe. Original recipe: 2 tbsp refined coconut oil 2 tbsp baking soda 10 drops peppermint essential oil New recipe? 4ish tbsp refined coconut oil 2ish tbsp baking soda 20 drops peppermint essential oil 1 scoop stevia (the bottle we have comes w/a scooper-approx 1/8 tsp?) I just added more of the oils and stevia to the previous mix, so the measurements aren't exact. From what I understand, you can just use straight baking soda to brush your teeth and everything else is for flavor and ease of use. I've done that and didn't mind. To me, this new recipe is "comparable" to regular toothpaste. You know...the way mashed cauliflower is "comparable" to mashed potatoes. Hubby wholeheartedly disagrees. He thinks it tastes horrible, but he likes that it's cheaper and that there are no artificial ingredients. I think I'll do the math for him to help him feel better about it all, but the health stuff is usually enough to convince him. TMI TIME: Additionally (math!) I actually flossed tonight. I almost never do it. I don't really have space between my teeth for stuff to get in, and I know flossing is supposed to be good for your gums, blah blah blah, but that doesn't really get me to do it very often. Well, today I flossed because I had a kernel stuck on the side of one of my teeth from eating popcorn and did the rest of my teeth while I was at it and one of my back teeth NEEDED it. Gross. I used the toothpaste with some extra water as a mouthwash and my teeth and mouth now feel super clean. TMI TIME OVER. The extra peppermint really leaves behind that fresh feeling. Some warnings I learned today is that wee ones should be careful with peppermint essential oil. So, when I make this for wee baby Spawn I'll either leave it out or use another essential oil that's safe for ingestion by children. It can also deplete milk supply for nursing mothers. Lastly, those with old pipes or septic systems shouldn't spit the down the sink or toilet. Those are the ones I remembered anyhow. Obviously any person experimenting with their home and health products should do their own due diligence. Are you completely bored now? Did you ever expect such a long post about toothpaste? Well...It's done. Bye for now!
