Judaism had six distinct sexes during the time of the Talmuds. No one seems to know what happened to them or when they disappeared but we have proof in the Halacha that this was something treated quite seriously back then. It was primarily for different intersex conditions but modern Trans and NB Jews sometimes use those traditional sexes instead of the modern male/female dichotomy
I thought it was 8, cause everything in Judaism is 8. Yeah that is a whole fascinating subject, but I was referring to ancient Judaism pre Roman Judaism, once you get the rabbinic Judaism suddenly things get a LOT more interesting theologically (again @afriendtokilltime would likely more than me on this). Is there any evidence of multiple genders in pre Hadrian Judaism? I only study certain periods of Judaism so its entirely possible I don’t know something. That is fascinating about fitting Trans/NB into a Talmud context rather than our notions of male/female.
Pre Roman Judaism had a more hostile view of homosexuality, though I’ve seen a lot of scholars argue that it was less “gays are a threat against god” and more “man...fuck the Greeks am I right?” Also it is seen as unclean, not immoral, because the Ancient world has a different way of understanding morality and purity
Thanks for letting me know though, this isn’t my area of expertise and I’m always super into more Jewish history/culture/theology. I actually know a lot less about Rabiddic Judaism than I wish .
