Day two in the Lake District and from my base at the @yhaofficial hostel in Borrowdale I headed over to Buttermere early morning and then stopped at Honister Slate Mine on the way back. Views along the Monkey Shelf. “In the early 1880s work started on the Honister Crag railway, which sat on the opposite side of the valley to Yew Crag. The idea of the railway was to link the workings on Honister Crag with the main Honister site. This was achieved via a self-acting incline and a section of track known as “The Monkey shelf”.
