First sentence ask - "No, Jee, he's my Bucky, not yours"

"No, Jee, he's my Bucky, not yours!"

He says it in his silliest voice, making faces at Jee-Yun right alongside Buck, but Eddie knows his kid well enough to hear the hint of truth in the words. It's... well, it's a lot of things, seeing Buck with a baby in his arms: this rush of what if, this preview of what could be, first child jealousy and all. He starts to reach for Christopher with a reassuring touch, but Buck is already there: he's been cradling Jee-Yun in his lap with both hands, laid out on his knees, but he moves her to his chest so that he can hold her with one arm and put the other around Chris and says, "You know what Jee-Yun needs to learn is how all the planets got their names."

Eddie sits back again and just watches them as Chris says, "I think she's too little for that," and Buck says, "I don't think so, but either way, tell me; I want to hear it again," and then Chris and Jee are each tucked against Buck's sides, settling back into the couch. Buck catches Eddie's eyes over their heads as Chris starts explaining Mercury to Jee and grins, and, well, maybe they have some more talking about the future to do.

The press of the stethoscope against Buck’s chest brings an anxiety only soothed by the fact that Eddie is the one holding it.

"Deep breath--" and that's impossible, has been for hours and hours; if it was anyone else he'd be spitting breathless curses but it's not, it's Eddie, so he tries, he tries, he tries.

"Shit," Eddie mutters, glancing up at Hen, who's watching with her arms crossed and one foot propped on the coffee table where Eddie had dropped down as soon as he'd come in the door; Buck tries to follow Eddie's gaze but he's coughing deep and wet and awful again and Eddie's face is the only thing in focus in the whole damn world.

"Gotta tell me this stuff, Buck," quiet and close, stethoscope draped around his neck again and hands holding his face so gently, thumbs brushing away the fever tears. Buck tries to say that he hadn't thought it was that bad; that he'd been so sure that one more sick day was all he'd need; but his body feels impossibly heavy and he can't pull the air in to speak.

"Up," Eddie says, and Buck's whole body is shaking but Eddie won't let him fall, and when Hen says, "I'll drive," somber and certain, Buck sinks against Eddie and closes his eyes; coughs against his chest and hides from the world and the bright lights and needle sticks he knows are coming soon; and he hates it, he hates it but he's no longer alone so it's alright, it's alright, it's aright.

Hmmm I'm going to go with my post-6x07 fic: It doesn't all turn out okay in the end.

(That doesn't mean there's some horrible tragic ending. It just means that life is complicated and people are allowed to make decisions about their life even if they're the "wrong" ones... and that there are situations where once you're a certain ways in, it's not possible to get back to a point where everything is fine and no one gets hurt, so all you can do is go from there.)

58. what is the last thing that a fic made you google when you were writing it?

I had to look back at my latest wip to remember but I believe it was "lymph nodes" to confirm that that is in fact the correct term for the swollen glands that happen with a sore throat. (I had a moment of doubt that the term might only apply to the things in the armpits!)

88. if you could have another author write your wip for you (bc we all dream of this occasionally), who would it be?

@renecdote, 100%. Our styles are very compatible. <3 (And I think becoming even more so over time lol.)

For the 1+5 sentences = Why do you have a puppy?

"Why do you have a puppy?"

His eyebrows are sky-high and Buck and Chris are just giggling, and this was not the plan when they came to the park.

"Oh, you know," Buck says, trying for nonchalant but unable to keep a straight face, "they were over there just giving them away; it would've been rude to refuse!"

"Yeah, Dad, rude!" Christopher echoes, and holds the puppy up to Eddie's chest until he doesn't have any choice but to take it in his arms.

Eddie shoots Buck a please tell me you didn't look, and Buck gives him a little headshake-- no, not really, don't freak out-- and Eddie exhales and cuddles the puppy, and it's small and warm and wriggling in his arms.

"The animal shelter event is right over there," Buck says, pointing, feigning innocence about the whole thing, and Chris is literally bouncing with excitement, and the puppy scrabbles up his chest to lick him frantically under the jaw, and then he's laughing too, and, all resolve giving way, saying, "Well, I guess it can't hurt to go take a look."

"Okay?" Eddie whispers beside him, close enough that their turnout coats brush, and Buck just blinks back, eyebrows drawn and mouth slightly open in muzzy confusion.

"I don't... I just," grasping at words for the panic that has no right to be there; everything is fine, their patient didn't even need an ambulance and everyone but him is just moving on to the next part of their day.

"God, the way those parents were talking about their kid, like her getting sick was some kind of goddamn inconvenience to them, zero thought to how scary it must've been for her?" Eddie says quietly, all sympathy and support, staying close, not letting him be lost. "Yeah, I can see how that was a hard one."

Buck blinks at him again, at the way Eddie knows him when he doesn't even know himself; lets himself be pulled along in Eddie's current back to the truck; lets the familiar voices wash over him and the pressure of Eddie's knee against his ground him until the shaking subsides.

#my internal debate over whether to even attempt the hiatus fic i've been thinking about continues...

There are a bunch of factors going into why I haven't started it yet (intense subject matter, not really in the headspace to write anything right now), but on the list is convincing myself that no one could possibly want to read it, so this helps. <3

In hindsight, Buck realized this wasn't the smartest idea he'd ever had.

The realization comes to him in the split second between when his feet slip off the moss-slick log he'd decided to use as a bridge and when he's submerged in the river below, and coincides with Eddie yelling his name.

He's been so sure it was safe to cross here, rather than hiking to the actual footbridge a quarter mile upstream... so sure that he now owes Eddie money, although he's wondering vaguely if he'll be expected to pay up if he manages to drown.

He bumps up against both a large rock and a large branch, and groans in pain and frustration and defeat, and hangs on for dear life; the river isn't deep but the current is deceptively strong and the rocks at the bottom are as slippery as that tree.

Eddie's sprinting down to meet him, undergrowth catching at his ankles; pulling him out, pulling him close; cursing him out quietly in his ear.

"Never again," he says, voice shaking just a little as he does a once-over even as Buck grumbles that he's fine, "and also," once he's satisfied that Buck is just soaked and a little bit bruised: "you owe me twenty dollars."

Buck looks up quick and guilty like a kid caught with their hand in the cookie jar, and then very deliberately sits up to his full height and smooths out his expression into mock indignation: "I will have you know that there was no conning involved, thank you very much."

"Yeah, Dad," Chris puts in, donut crumbs escaping from his mouth as he speaks, "Buck was the one who asked me if we should get them!"

Eddie makes an exasperated sort of noise, but he can't keep from laughing when Buck hides his face in his hands: "Just tell me you got the good coffee, too, and I will ignore the fact that you're hyping our kid up on sugar at eight a.m."

Buck blinks at him, at the way our kid is still something new and wonderful and burning in both their chests, and passes him a to-go cup across the table, still hot like maybe Buck had timed their cafe run to when Eddie was getting home after shift. Eddie pulls a donut from the box and takes a bite and a sip of coffee, and lets his free hand intertwine with Buck's: "Thank you for this," he says quietly, and it means coffee and donuts after a long, exhausting shift, and it means being so good with Chris, and it means everything, all of it, the joy they've found together, and Buck squeezes his hand like he gets it without anything more being said.
