Nobody is saying monosexual queers (lesbian/gay/homosexuals) are not oppressed or somehow have the same privilege of monosexual straight folks. The point is, bisexual/pansexual/etc folks have *even less* privilege than their fellow queers who are monosexual. Bisexual people are much more likely than gays to commit/attempt suicide, but both are subject to higher rates of suicide than straight people. Nobody is telling you you're "not oppressed" or "privileged" for being monosexual (1/2)
(2/2) , just that “multi” sexuals are EVEN less privileged than queer monosexuals.
i’m just going to quote tony martainducreff:
the concept of ‘privilege’ implies that someone has a societal power that someone else doesn’t. this is simply not the case here because in the context of sexuality the only truly privileged ones are heterosexuals and this is not because they’re monosexual but because they’re straight. the claim that gay and lesbian people are actively oppressing bi/pan people is not only ludicrous but also damaging because it deviates the attention from the actual oppressor, which is what Alan Sinfield defines as the “straightgeist” i.e. all “normative ideas about gender and sexuality” (from Gay and After, 1998)
moreover the whole point of privilege and oppression is that the alleged oppressor must directly benefit from exercising oppression which is simply not the case in the context of the relationship between monosexuals within the LGBTQIAP+ community and polysexuals. if monosexual people, no matter gay or straight, are being biphobic, gay people benefit from this in exactly 0 ways, just like bi/pan people do not benefit from homophobia in any way.
